TikTok: Murder Gone Viral – a new documentary series on Viasat True Crime

"TikTok: Murder Gone Viral" is a British documentary series from 2024, aired on Viasat True Crime, which delves into the dark corners of one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. TikTok, known for its short, dynamic videos, has not only become a place for creative expression but also the backdrop for disturbing and tragic events. The show highlights real criminal cases linked to TikTok. The investigations featured in the series offer viewers an inside look into solving criminal mysteries and demonstrate how social media can be exploited by murderers. This series is a must-watch for true crime enthusiasts and fans of thrilling real-life stories.

TikTok – a rapidly growing platform with dark corners

TikTok, created by the Chinese company ByteDance, is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in the world. TikTok users create and post short videos on a variety of topics – from dancing and singing to tutorials and commentary on current social issues. TikTok’s algorithms are designed to maximize the time users spend on the platform by presenting them with content they are most likely to find engaging.
However, like any social media platform, TikTok carries certain risks. On the one hand, it serves as a tool for communication and self-expression, but on the other, it has become a space where young people are exposed to cyberbullying, manipulation, scams, and even life-threatening dangers. The cases presented in "TikTok: Murder Gone Viral" reveal how seemingly innocent activity on the platform can lead to tragic outcomes.

The Murderers: Mother and Daughter – the Case of Mahek and Ansreen Bukhari

One of the most shocking cases featured in the series is the story of Mahek and Ansreen Bukhari, a TikTok influencer and her mother, who were convicted of double murder in the UK. This was the first case in the country’s history where a mother and daughter committed such a crime together.
Mahek Bukhari, known on social media for her TikTok account, and her mother Ansreen were sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of two men: Saqib Hussain and Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin. The case, which took place in Leicester, involved a fatal car crash that was the result of a deliberate chase.
It was revealed that 21-year-old Hussain, Ansreen Bukhari’s former lover, had threatened to release compromising material if she didn’t return the £3,000 he claimed to have spent on her. On February 11, 2023, Mahek Bukhari lured Hussain to a supermarket parking lot under the pretense of giving him the money. Waiting there were Mahek’s accomplices, armed and ready for a chase. When Hussain and his friend Ijazuddin tried to flee, their car was rammed off the road, crashed into a tree, and burst into flames. Investigations showed that the women and their accomplices did nothing to help and instead tried to cover their tracks.
This chilling case shows just how far people will go to hide their secrets and how social media can be used to manipulate and control others.

The Murder of Sania Khan – A Tragic TikTok Story

Another story told in the program is the murder of Sania Khan, a TikTok influencer who struggled with the stigma of divorce in the South Asian community. Khan, a young Pakistani-American photographer, gained popularity on TikTok by sharing her experiences of life after divorce and the pressure she felt from her community.
In July 2023, just days before she planned to move back to her hometown of Chattanooga, Khan was murdered by her estranged husband, Raheel Ahmad, who couldn’t come to terms with their separation. Ahmad traveled from a distant state to "save" their marriage but instead killed Khan before taking his own life.
This story highlights how social pressure and lack of support can lead to tragic consequences. Despite receiving threats, Khan courageously spoke out about her experiences on TikTok, seeking comfort and support from her followers. Unfortunately, her story ended in tragedy, showing the dangers of intimate relationships and how social media can become a tool for desperate and dangerous individuals.

The Murder of Alexis Sharkey – The Mysterious Death of an Influencer

The third case in the series is the story of Alexis Sharkey, an American influencer who went missing in November 2020. A few days later, her body was found by the roadside in Houston, Texas. Sharkey was a well-known figure on TikTok and Instagram, where she shared aspects of her personal and professional life.
Alexis Sharkey was seen as an energetic, vibrant, and successful person. However, behind the scenes, there was turmoil in her life. Her husband, Tom Sharkey, was suspected of her murder, but before the police could arrest him, he took his own life. The investigation revealed that Alexis had repeatedly told her friends that she feared for her life and was planning to divorce.
Her death shocked the online community and revealed that even public figures who seem to live perfect lives can be victims of domestic violence. This story illustrates the complexity of murder investigations, especially under the scrutiny of social media pressures.

The Dark Side of Social Media

"TikTok: Murder Gone Viral" is a series that asks tough questions about the role of social media in our lives and how it can affect our safety. Each story told in this series serves as a cautionary tale for internet users, reminding them to be careful and aware of the dangers lurking in the virtual world.
With gripping stories and in-depth case analyses, this series is essential viewing for those interested in crime, investigations, and the darker sides of human nature.
