She Disappeared in the Afternoon. Her Family Immediately Knew Something Was Wrong

On April 27, 2006, Ashley told her family that she was going to a job interview. She never came home and stopped answering her phone.

Her abandoned car was found in a park. Inside were the clothes she had planned to wear to the interview, along with her sports kit. It was clear that Ashley had not followed the plan she had described to her family.

The most important clue was found in her phone records. One number appeared far more frequently than the others.

It belonged to Sam Shelton.

Who Was Sam Shelton and What Was His Relationship with Ashley Reeves?

Samson "Sam" Shelton was a 26-year-old physical education and driver's education teacher, baseball coach and professional wrestler who performed under the name "The Teacher".

He had first met Ashley several years earlier while working at the school she attended. Before the attack, they had reconnected, spent time together and played basketball.

Shelton admitted to investigators that they had engaged in sexual contact. Ashley was only 17 years old. It was a relationship between an adult teacher and a teenage girl, marked by an enormous imbalance of age, experience and influence.

What Happened Inside the Car?

During hours of questioning, Shelton changed his account of events several times.

He eventually admitted that he attacked Ashley inside the car. He placed her in a chokehold similar to a wrestling move. He reportedly heard a crack in her neck before her body went limp.

Instead of calling for help, he drove her to Citizens Park in Belleville and dragged her deep into the woods. He then tightened a belt around her neck in an attempt to make it appear that the attack had happened there.

He believed he had killed her.

Why Did Sam Shelton Try to Kill Ashley?

There is still no single, independently confirmed explanation.

Shelton claimed that he had wanted to end their relationship and that Ashley reacted aggressively. According to him, the confrontation then spiralled out of control. Ashley, however, later said that she had been the one trying to end their relationship.

One fact remains beyond dispute: after the initial assault, Shelton took further steps to stage the crime and abandoned the teenager in a place where she was almost certain to die.

This was not simply the tragic result of one impulsive argument.

He Left Her to Die. Then He Went Dancing

This is one of the most disturbing details of the case.

After abandoning Ashley in the woods, Shelton appeared at a country club, where he calmly took part in an evening of dancing. He was captured on camera.

While the gravely injured teenager lay alone in the cold and darkness, the man responsible for her condition danced as though nothing had happened.

How Did Police Find Ashley Reeves?

Investigators questioned Shelton for approximately 12 to 13 hours. At first, he denied any involvement. Later, he admitted only fragments of what had happened.

Eventually, he told police where he had left Ashley.

Officers spent tens of minutes searching through the wet, dense woodland in darkness. When they finally found her, they initially believed she was dead.

Then they saw her breathing.

After more than 30 hours lying helpless in the woods, Ashley was still alive.

Why Was Ashley Paralysed?

Ashley suffered a severe neck and spinal cord injury. Contemporary media reports and prosecutors described the injury as a broken neck. The repeated strangulation also caused serious brain trauma, most likely worsened by a lack of oxygen.

When she was found, she could not move. She was hypothermic, covered in insect bites and in immediate danger of dying.

This did not mean that she would remain permanently and completely paralysed. Through medical treatment and intensive rehabilitation, she gradually began to regain control of her body.

What Did Her Recovery Look Like?

Being rescued from the woods was only the beginning.

Ashley was placed in a medically induced coma. Once her condition had stabilised, she began a long and painful rehabilitation process.

She had to relearn how to:

- move her head and arms,

- sit and stand,

- walk,

- perform the simplest everyday tasks.

For a teenager who had previously been active and played basketball, losing these basic abilities was another devastating blow.

Despite everything, she returned to school, graduated and was crowned homecoming queen.

Did Ashley Regain Her Memory of the Attack?

The brain injury meant that Ashley had no clear memory of the attack or many of the moments leading up to it.

The film shows her attempting to reconstruct her shattered memories and understand who had tried to kill her. This is partly a dramatic device, but it reflects the genuine neurological effects of her injuries.

Her body began recovering before her memories did. The truth about what happened in the woods therefore came primarily from physical evidence and Shelton's statements.

What Sentence Did Sam Shelton Receive?

In 2007, Shelton pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

He did not apologise to Ashley during sentencing. The plea agreement meant that a full trial could be avoided, sparing the teenager from having to testify in detail and relive the attack in court.

Shelton was required to serve at least 85 per cent of his sentence.

Where Is Sam Shelton Now?

Sam Shelton is no longer in prison.

He was released on April 22, 2024, after serving approximately 17 years of his 20-year sentence. His release did not result from an acquittal or from his conviction being overturned. It followed the rules governing the minimum proportion of the sentence he was required to serve.

He remains under supervision until April 22, 2027.

What Is Ashley Reeves' Life Like Today?

Ashley gradually regained her independence. She later worked and became the mother of two children. In public appearances, she encouraged other survivors of traumatic experiences never to give up on themselves.

Today, however, she lives largely outside the public eye. There is no reliable, up-to-date medical information confirming that she has made a complete physical recovery or that she experiences no lasting effects from her injuries.
