"Monster In The Morgue: The chilling crime that shocked the UK

On Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 June at 21:00 CET, Viasat True Crime presents the two-part documentary Monster In The Morgue. This chilling true crime series reveals the details of one of the most horrific criminal cases in British history. Discover the story of David Fuller - an electrician who evaded justice for over three decades, hiding his crimes behind the mask of an ordinary life.

The Tunbridge Wells murders - the nightmare begins

In June 1987, 25-year-old Wendy Knell, manager of the SupaSnaps photo shop in Tunbridge Wells, was found murdered in her flat. She had been beaten, raped and strangled. Five months later, in November, 20-year-old Caroline Pierce went missing. Her naked body was found three weeks later in Romney Marsh, 40 miles from her home. These two brutal murders, later known as the 'Bedsit Murders', remained unsolved for over 30 years, haunting the local community.

David Fuller - the double life of a killer

Born on 4 September 1954, David Fuller was married three times and had a passion for photography. He was once the unofficial photographer for the London-based rock band Cutting Crew, touring with them in 1985 alongside his second wife, Sally.

In 2020, thanks to advances in DNA technology, police linked Fuller to the murders of Wendy Knell and Caroline Pierce. He was arrested at his home in Heathfield, East Sussex, on 3 December 2020. During a search of the property, detectives found hard drives hidden behind a false wall containing over 14 million images of sexual abuse.

Morgue crimes - unimaginable depravity

After Fuller's arrest, it was revealed that during his years working as an electrician in hospitals across Kent, including Tunbridge Wells Hospital, he sexually abused the bodies of deceased women and girls in hospital morgues. His victims ranged in age from 9 to 100. He recorded his actions, creating a horrifying archive of evidence.

In 2021, Fuller was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the murders, plus a further 12 years for 51 other sexual offences. He is currently serving his sentence at HMP Frankland.

Systemic failures - how did this happen?

An independent review found that serious systemic failures in the hospitals where Fuller worked enabled him to commit his crimes over a 15-year period. Lack of oversight, inadequate procedures and poor security in hospital mortuaries gave him unrestricted access to the deceased. As a result, 17 formal recommendations were made to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Monster In The Morgue is a gripping two-part documentary that meticulously examines the crimes of David Fuller and the lengthy investigation that led to his capture.
