They looked like a perfect family on the outside, but Richard Spencer's wife Sheree was a violent abuser; what Sheree hadn't anticipated was that Richard had been recording the abuse.
They looked like a perfect family, but Richard Spencer was living a nightmare; unbeknownst to anyone but him, his wife Sheree was a violent abuser who left him living in fear for 20 years.
The show "My Wife, My Abuser: Captured on Camera" on Viasat True Crime is one of the most gripping and shocking crime documentaries. The production unveils the dark secrets hidden behind the facade of an ideal family, whose nightmare unfolded every day within the privacy of their home. It is a story of violence, control, manipulation, and psychological terror that shocks with its brutality, revealing how a crime drama can take place where we least expect it.
Sheree Spencer, a 45-year-old former high-ranking employee of HM Prison and Probation Service, was responsible for prison reform. In her professional life, she participated in important meetings and was respected for her career success, even befriending prominent figures such as former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. However, behind this professional persona lay a brutal tyrant. For 20 years, Sheree abused her husband, Richard, who endured daily torment in their home.
Richard, 46, was once perceived as a happy husband and father of three daughters, but in reality, he lived in constant fear of his wife, who subjected him to daily physical and psychological abuse. The couple met at a club in 2000 and married nine years later on the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand. They seemed like the perfect couple—successful careers, three children, and a beautiful six-bedroom country home. However, the reality behind this seemingly ideal life was a shocking crime drama.
Throughout their 20-year relationship, Sheree Spencer regularly beat and humiliated Richard. Her attacks were brutal and sadistic, often leaving him curled up on the floor, trying to protect himself. In one attack, she struck him with a wine bottle so hard that it caused permanent ear damage. On another occasion, she forced him to clean up her feces from the floor. Every day was filled with vulgar insults and physical violence. Sheree called Richard names like "fatty," "pansy," and "idiot," and the injuries she inflicted forced him to hide bruises with makeup to avoid questions from neighbors and friends.
But Richard found the strength to fight back. Over the years, he secretly recorded her brutal attacks, gathering evidence of the abuse. When police launched a criminal investigation in 2021, Richard provided 43 photos of his injuries, which became crucial evidence leading to Sheree's conviction and a four-year prison sentence.
During the trial at Hull Crown Court, Judge Kate Rayfield described Sheree’s actions as "the worst case of controlling behavior" she had ever seen. She noted that Sheree’s intent was to humiliate Richard and cause severe psychological damage. In February 2023, Sheree Spencer was found guilty and sentenced to four years in prison, bringing an end to her years of domination over Richard. But the story didn’t end there.
In July 2023, just five months into her sentence, Sheree Spencer was controversially transferred from the strict HMP New Hall to the open prison Askham Grange. This decision, which occurred unusually early in her sentence, sparked outrage. Richard Spencer expressed his disappointment, believing that Sheree received “preferential treatment” due to her professional connections.
Askham Grange, one of only two open women’s prisons in the country, offers much more lenient conditions, including opportunities to work in gardening and a café. Shocked by this move, Richard stated that his case offers little hope for other domestic abuse victims seeking proper justice.
Richard Spencer has chosen not to remain silent about his ordeal. Working with the creators of "My Wife, My Abuser: Captured on Camera," he aims to raise awareness about men who are victims of domestic violence. His story is not only a gripping crime drama but also an inspiring tale of courage and determination in the face of unimaginable hardship.
