The Cannibal Next Door: A Premiere Documentary on Viasat True Crime, Uncovering the Disturbing Story of Armin Meiwes

On Friday, 13th of December at 21:00 CET, Viasat True Crime viewers will have the opportunity to watch the premiere episode of the documentary series “Case of the Week.” In the second week of December, Viasat True Crime presents The Cannibal Next Door—a British documentary film that delves into one of the most shocking and unsettling stories in the realm of true crime and criminal psychology. The production sheds light on the life of Armin Meiwes, a German cannibal who not only fantasized about eating another person but ultimately fulfilled this dark desire.

The Dark Story of Armin Meiwes

Armin Meiwes harbored this disturbing desire throughout his life. In his youth, fantasies about consuming a person began to take root in his mind and only grew stronger over the years. Meiwes hailed from the small town of Rotenburg, Germany, where he led an unassuming life as an IT specialist. Outwardly, he appeared to be entirely ordinary, but the world would later learn that he concealed desires so shocking they defied comprehension. His story accelerated when the internet became a tool for people to connect over all manner of interests, including those on the extreme and controversial fringes.

In 2001, Meiwes found someone online who was willing to fulfill his desire. Bernd Jürgen Brandes, a German engineer, responded to an advertisement Armin had posted, which openly sought a voluntary victim willing to participate in a cannibalistic act. The two men met at Meiwes’s home in Rotenburg, where Brandes, fully aware of what was to come, eagerly agreed to fulfill this horrifying fantasy. What occurred that night forever altered the lives of Armin Meiwes and the community that would learn about his crime.

The Sequence of Events: A Meeting That Ended in Gruesome Murder

The encounter between Armin Meiwes and Bernd Brandes became one of the most controversial and shocking crimes of the 21st century. Both men consented to film the entire event as proof of mutual agreement. Brandes, fully conscious and consenting, allowed Meiwes to dismember and then consume his body. For both parties, it was an act rooted in their own troubled desires and a shared need to fulfill an unusual vision of intimacy.

After committing the murder, Meiwes stored Brandes’s body parts in a freezer, consuming pieces of him regularly over time. During the investigation, authorities uncovered recordings and photographs that documented various stages of this crime. Meiwes was only arrested in 2002 when another internet user reported suspicious ads Meiwes had posted.

The Investigation and Sentence: Moral and Psychological Complexities of the Case

The investigation brought the entire dark story to light, forcing society to confront difficult questions regarding the limits of consent and morality. Meiwes's defense argued that, because the victim had consented to this act, it should not be considered a crime in the traditional sense. However, the court rejected this defense, classifying Meiwes’s actions as murder. In 2004, Armin Meiwes was sentenced to 8.5 years in prison, but the case was later reopened, and his sentence was increased. In 2006, the court reconsidered the case, finding Meiwes guilty of murder and sentencing him to life in prison.
