Viewers of Viasat True Crime are well acquainted with documentary series and reconstructions of high-profile criminal cases. This April, however, the channel is introducing something completely new. The stunt “Movie Night” is a special slot where every Saturday at 21:00 CET viewers can watch films inspired by real-life crimes. These are stories about people caught up in brutal events, desperate fights for survival and cases that have left a lasting mark on true crime history.

The new stunt offers audiences a different take on the true crime genre. Instead of traditional documentaries, viewers will see feature-length dramatizations that bring authentic criminal stories to the screen – often just as dramatic and shocking as those found in real police reports.
As part of the April Movie Night stunt, viewers will see three productions based on true events.

Terror Comes Knocking: The Marcela Borges Story

Premiere: 4 April at 21:00 CET
Extra showing: 25 April at 21:00 CET
The film opening the new stunt tells a chilling story of how ordinary life can turn into a nightmare in a matter of moments. Dascha Polanco, known to audiences from Orange Is the New Black, plays Marcela Borges – a woman forced to fight for her family’s survival during a brutal home invasion.
Inspired by true events, the film follows Marcela, who is pregnant at the time of the attack. She, her husband and their young son are held hostage by armed intruders demanding a huge sum of money. In a situation where every minute could mean the difference between life and death, Marcela must rely on courage, instinct and determination.
It is a gripping story about survival – and the strength of a mother willing to do anything to protect her family.

Sugar

Airs: 11 April at 21:00 CET
The second film in the stunt takes viewers out to the open sea – into the middle of one of the most daring smuggling operations of recent years. Sugar is inspired by the real-life story of the so-called “Cocaine Cowgirls”, two women drawn into the dangerous world of international drug trafficking.
The film stars Emmy Award winner Armand Assante alongside Katherine McNamara. What begins as an exciting adventure quickly turns into a deadly game involving law enforcement and organized crime.
It is a story about greed, desperation and how easily the promise of easy money can lead to a criminal nightmare.

Bad Behind Bars: Jodi Arias

Airs: 18 April at 21:00 CET
One of the most controversial criminal cases of the 21st century comes to the screen in Bad Behind Bars: Jodi Arias, directed by Rama Rau, one of Canada’s leading female filmmakers.
The film explores the notorious case of Jodi Arias, a woman accused of the brutal murder of her partner. The trial became a media sensation, with the public following every development in the courtroom for years.
It is a disturbing story of obsession, manipulation and violence that led to one of the most shocking crimes of recent times.

A new Saturday night tradition

The Movie Night stunt is a new offering from Viasat True Crime for viewers who want to experience real criminal stories in a cinematic format. Each film highlights a different aspect of the world of crime – from violent home invasions and international drug trafficking to high-profile murder trials.
